Spring sports began this week, keeping students on their toes. The week began with the CSA Reds travelling to Genesis Sports Complex for the CPL tournament.
The softball girls opened up with Belle Plaine as their first competitor on Monday.
Junior Joslin Bartelson started in the circle for the Reds and threw a complete game. Bartelson threw five innings, allowing three hits and two walks and striking out eight.
The girls had a strong offensive night with five hits, seven RBI’s, seven walks, and seven strikeouts. Senior Reece Johnson led the team in hits, with two, including one inside-the-park homerun.
“It was kind of unexpected,” she said. “I got stopped at third base, and I was only expecting a triple, but (head coach Justi) Norris sent me home.”
The Reds run-ruled the Dragons 12-0.
The second softball game of the night was against the Medicine Lodge Indians.
Senior Macie Hartman threw a complete game for the Reds. Hartman threw seven innings, allowing 11 hits, seven runs (all earned), two walks, and eight strikeouts.
The girls’ bats were hot, earning 11 hits, eight RBIs, six walks, and six strikeouts. Freshmen Sam Howard and Trinity Sisk, plus Johnson, had two hits each, for a final score of 10-7.
The baseball boys went 1-1 on Monday night. The Reds beat the Chaparral Roadrunners 6-1, with sophomore Gabe Tarrant beginning on the mound.
Tarrant threw four innings, allowing four hits, one run (all earned), two walks, and five strikeouts.
Tarrant was relieved by sophomore Koy Ast, who threw two innings and allowed two hits, no runs, no walks, and one strike out. To close the game, senior Jase Downey threw the final inning. He allowed no hits, no runs, no walks, and two strike outs.
The boys collected eight hits, five RBI’s, four walks, and five strikeouts. Tarrant and Argonia freshman Zach Morrison each collected two hits for the Reds in the game.
Following the Chaparral game, the boys moved on to play the Kingman/Norwich Eagles. The Reds took the loss 3-5 and didn’t get any runs until the fifth and sixth innings.
Senior Nolan Warren started on the mound for the Reds. Warren pitched 4.1 innings, allowing four hits, four runs (two earned), three walks, and three strikeouts. Warren was relieved by Argonia freshman Taygen Tracey, who threw 1.2 innings and allowed one hit, no runs, no walks, and two strikeouts.
The closer for the night was Downey. Downey threw the final inning and allowed one hit, one run (all earned), no walks, and no strikeouts.
The Reds had a slow offensive night. They collected three runs, four hits, three RBI’s, two walks, and nine strikeouts. Downey hit a triple in the bottom of the sixth to score Ast.
Boys JV tennis traveled to Pratt. Junior Aaron Doll and freshman Colby Doll played doubles, and freshman Colson Jones played singles.
BPW hosted the senior girls dinner and they made flower bouquets.
The CPL tournament continued on Thursday at Genesis. The softball girls played Wichita Trinity, followed by Cheney. The girls took the loss in both games.
Junior Joslin Bartelson started on the mound for Trinity. She threw 4.1 innings and allowed 13 hits, 10 runs (nine earned), four walks and eight strikeouts.
Senior Macie Hartman closed the game, throwing 1.2 innings and allowing no hits, no runs, one walk, and no strikeouts.
The Reds took the loss 3-10.
The second game was against the Cheney Cardinals. The Reds took the loss 6-9 after an attempted comeback in the 6th inning.
On the baseball side of the tournament, the Reds opened up with the Belle Plaine Dragons.
Junior Carson May started on the mound for the Reds. He threw 4.2 innings, allowing one hit, one run (none earned), two walks, and four strikeouts.
Freshman Drake Bartelson relieved May, throwing 0.1 innings. He allowed no hits, no runs, no walks, and one strikeout.
Argonia freshman Zach Morrison closed the game for the Reds, throwing the final inning. He allowed two hits, no runs, one walk, and one strikeout.
The boys scored 11 runs against the dragons, and collected seven hits, nine RBI’s, seven walks, and four strikeouts.
They took the victory 11-1.
The second game was against the Cheney Cardinals. The boys took the loss 0-10.
Sophomore Koy Ast was the starting pitcher for the game. Ast threw 4.0 innings, and allowed six hits, six runs (four earned), three walks, and six strikeouts.
Ast was relieved by sophomore Gabe Tarrant. Tarrant threw one inning, and allowed three hits, two runs (all earned), no walks, and one strikeout.
Argonia freshman Taygen Tracey closed the game. He threw one inning, giving up three hits, two runs (all earned), no walks, and three strikeouts.
The bats were cold this game. The Reds scored no runs, collecting three hits, no RBI’s, three walks, and eight strikeouts.
The track team had their opening meet at Clearwater.
For the boys running events, junior Joseph Howard placed second in the 400 meter dash. Freshman Brody Warren placed third in 110 meter hurdles as well as sixth in 300 meter hurdles. The boys 4×100 meter relay team finished fifth.
In field events, senior Connor Koster finished second in high jump. Senior Colton Friess placed fourth in high jump as well. sophomore Ethan Partika placed third in the pole vault, and senior Cohen Newell placed third in shot put.
For the girls team, sophomore Jade Erker placed second in the 100 meter dash and second in the 200 meter dash. Senior Miley Pauly finished fifth place in 100 meter hurdles, and sophomore Kaylin Finley placed sixth in the same event. Finley also placed sixth in the 300 meter hurdles. The girls 4×100 meter relay team finished second.
For the field events, junior Addison Rusco placed sixth in high jump. Erker placed fourth in the long jump, and junior Delaney Jones placed fifth. Jones also won the javelin. Junior Lairen Pauly won the triple jump, freshman Paige Rusco placed third, and sophomore Micah Wolke placed fifth. Junior Adysen Conkle placed fifth in the pole vault. Sophomore Zabrina King won discus and shot put, and senior Hayley Pauly finished second. Pauly also finished second in the shot put and javelin.
The varsity boys tennis team had their opening meet at home this year. The boys took first at the meet.
Junior Ian May took first in No. 2 singles. Senior Eli Benge and Joseph Beck took first in No. 1 doubles. Junior Grayson Allen took second in No. 1 singles. Freshmen Kaleb Zoglmann and Hudson Stevens got third in No. 2 doubles.
