Returning back from spring break, students went right back into their usual, busy lives. The week started out with tryouts for the cheer team for the upcoming school year.
The practices were held at 5:30 in the morning, typically lasting to 6:45. There were 17 girls trying out, but only 12 were allowed to make the squad.
“They’ve gone pretty good,” junior Brooke Koster said. “I’m feeling good about tryouts and I’m excited for my senior year. I wish I would have done it sooner.”
Koster was on the team last season and said she has noticed the growth from the practices.
“The growth between Monday morning and having tryouts on Thursday is pretty cool. You have girls who have never done it before, and they’re already looking better than what they started out as,” she said.
Tryouts were held Thursday after school, and the new members of the team are: seniors Joslin Bartelson, Adysen Conkle, Brooke Koster, juniors Mireyah Conkle, Jade Erker, sophomores Chloe Allen, Josie Ebenkamp, Faith Fisher, Brilee Haradon, Essie Herndon, and freshmen Nevaeh Doffing and Alexis Warren.
The CSA Reds baseball team opened up the season by traveling to Clearwater for a double header. The boys lost the first game 0-8, earning four hits, six walks, and seven strike-outs.
Although the score does not show it, the boys said they had some good things going for them.
“The pitching (was good),” sophomore Gabe Tarrant said. “Everybody was hitting the strike zone and hitting locations.”
Tarrant started on the mound for the Reds, and threw 3.2 innings. He allowed eight hits, five earned runs, one walk and two strike outs.
After the loss, the Reds didn’t let it bring them down. Going into the second game, the mood of the team changed.
“We went into the second game a lot more clear headed,” Tarrant said.
The Reds were not shut out in the second game, losing 5-10 to the Indians. The Reds showed some productivity on offense, having six hits, seven walks, and 14 strike-outs.
Senior Nolan Warren started on the mound for the Reds. Warren threw three innings, allowing seven hits, three earned runs, two walks and three strike outs. Warren also led the team in RBI’s with three.
“Our offense was way better, and I felt like throughout the whole game, our vibe was good. There wasn’t a point in the game where I felt like we stopped talking,” Warren said.
The CSA Reds will face Chaparral Roadrunners for their next game on Monday, March 30.
The spring play, “Tuesdays With Mummy,” will have its opening performance on Friday, March 27. The cast had dress rehearsals this week, which went well according to junior Troy Herndon.
“I would like to thank Melissa Doffing for all her hard work in making the costumes because they look amazing,” Herndon said.
With an enthusiastic cast, Herndon mentioned that one actress in particular gets very into character.
“Klara Ast plays both Solomon and the mumkey,” he said. ”It’s a little mummy monkey, and it’s a chaotic animal appearing for a short bit and gets a lot of laughs out of it, so it’s perfect for Klara.”
The play will perform Friday and Saturday night at 7, with a matinee on Friday at 1:30.
