“Daisy Jones and the Six” is a novel written by Taylor Jenkins Reed. This novel is about a fictional band getting its start, their rise to fame, and their sudden fall. Reed based this band on the famous band Fleetwood Mac. She also based her lead character, Daisy, off of Fleetwood Mac’s lead singer Stevie Nicks.
A few years after the novel was released, a TV series (with the same title) was created. This show can be streamed on Prime Video.
The plot of both the novel and TV show are generally the same. Primarily set in the 1970s, they first follow Daisy Jones, a girl from the Hollywood Hills. She falls in love with music at a young age and spontaneously decides to pursue it. The plot then follows a group of teenage boys from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Like Daisy, they have a dream of pursuing music. The band moves to LA and eventually becomes successful. While working on their second album the manager notices Daisy and thinks that she would be a good fit. Daisy Jones joins the band, and although it is a rocky start, they eventually take off and become the biggest band in the 70s, with it all crashing down at their concert in Chicago.
The TV series stuck to the plot for the most part. However, there was one big change that bothered me. They cut out one of the members of the band making it five plus Daisy, therefore the title of the band does not make much sense. Besides that change, the show stuck to the novel for the most part.
I really enjoyed the characters: they all had their different elements, which added to the story. The plot moved fairly quickly and kept me on my toes. I thought the casting was great. The actors did a phenomenal job.
Overall, I enjoyed both the novel and the show despite the major difference. I didn’t think the difference was necessary, but it didn’t ruin the show for me.
I rate both 5 out of 5 cardinal heads.
