“Me and Earl and the Dying Girl” Review

When I first read “Me and Earl and the Dying Girl,” I knew it was about a girl with cancer. I thought it would just be another cancer love story similar to “The Fault in Our Stars” by John Green. It was not. I have also watched the movie, and it follows the book. To be completely honest, I have no idea what the true point of the story actually is, but I do know that I love it.

The book starts by introducing the main characters, Greg and Earl. Both are high school outcasts, and Greg has always been an only child. They make films together about the most hilarious and random things, and they are always very comical. They are polar opposites and come from two different sides of town. Greg’s mom finds out a girl in Greg and Earl’s class has cancer. Her name is Rachel. Rachel and Greg’s mom are good friends, and Greg is forced to go hang out with her. He does; for weeks, and it is definitely a doomed friendship as Greg calls it.

I know what you’re thinking: oh, here we go again… another love story. But no, they do not fall in love. I think everyone should read this book though, because it may leave you thinking deeply on how you should treat others with kindness before you know what they’re going through, and think before you speak. I feel like the point of the story is to be empathetic because if you read it or watch the movie you realize the three high schoolers are not empathetic at all, and they show that through dark humor and jokes when one of them is clearly in pain from their problems. So, reading it is worthwhile. I give this book and movie 5 out of 5 cardinal heads.
