The Student Publications had a split class this year: half of the staff participated in another class period due to scheduling conflicts. A total of nine students were on staff to produce the website and yearbook. Eight of the nine students were brand new to the publications class this year.
One of the new members was senior and social media manager Anna Bender.
“My favorite part about SPUB is working together as a team to create something for all the students to enjoy,” Bender said.
The journalism class was non-traditional, in that members depended on each other to get their jobs done.
“The SPUB community is an independent and fun community to be a part of, because we have so many great girls who put their all into everything that they do,” senior and editor-in-chief Bethany Hollis said.
In January and February, the journalism class participated in KSPA competitions, and most students submitted at least two projects that were judged at the regional level, then if they placed first through sixth, they participated in the state competition. Out of 21 entries submitted, 17 qualified to go to state.
“I wrote two sports articles,” junior and assistant editor Joslin Bartelson said. “One was for newspaper and one was for yearbook. I really enjoyed it because I am an athlete, and I understand it more than others, but I really thought it was fun.”
