The last time the Scholars Bowl team had been to state was back in 2016. This year, they won the Regional Tournament but did not make it out of pool play at state, finishing tenth in the state.
Those who attended state were the top six scorers on the team. One of those six, senior CJ Round, decided to stick to what he knew to prepare for state.
“I didn’t do too much differently, but we did great as a team,” Round said. “It’s been a while since we’ve been to state, so that was cool.”
From math to foreign language, Scholars Bowl tests students on their knowledge on a vast range of subjects. With there being so many different categories, there is room for a subject to fall through the cracks.
“[My least favorite subject is] current events, I hate them,” sophomore Sylvester Hemberger said. “I don’t keep up with them. I am stuck in the last century of history and a little bit of today.”
The team went to 23 meets throughout the year. Freshman Troy Herndon joined because he had dabbled in something similar. Herndon said he participated in the religion bowl back in elementary school, carrying his love for it to Scholars Bowl.
“I loved the religion bowl and loved spending time with everyone,” Herndon said, “which made it really enjoyable and made me want to do Scholars Bowl.”
