Since 2005, author Rick Riordan has been creating magical fantasy worlds about Greek gods and heroes. And now, with a TV show on the way and on the heels of a new book’s release this past May, he hasn’t slowed down one bit. Last month, Riordan released a new installment to the beloved Percy Jackson series.
This new book, “The Chalice of the Gods,” focuses back on the original trio of Percy, Annabeth, and Grover. Percy has plans to go to college with Annabeth, but due to his being a child of one of the Big Three, he has to get three recommendation letters from the gods. This book follows Percy on his first quest of retrieving a chalice that people can become immortal after drinking out of.
And, boy, did I eat it up.
I, for one, was happy to have the trio back, and not as some side characters to new stories. I also missed Riordan’s writing style. Yes, it’s meant for fourth graders, but it’s funny and silly and really an enjoyable read. Also, seeing Riordan’s writing evolve to match the lingo of the youth is very entertaining. Seeing him use the word ‘himbo’ was especially satisfying.
This book is just the right bit of nostalgia for old Percy Jackson fans while also being new enough to keep them interested. I rate this book 5 out of 5 cardinal heads.
