Scholars Bowl coach makes an impact

Owen Balman, Natalie Drouhard, and Cheyanne Tull compete in the Scholar’s Bowl Meet on November 12.

Scholars Bowl team is being led full steam by first year coach Kristy Martin. The team has gone to several meets, led by both Mrs. Martin and returning coach Sara Kitch.

“Mrs. Martin has been a really fun coach to have, and I think that she’s adapted to coaching really well,” junior Dakota Beck said.

This year’s Scholars Bowl team has 12 members. There are one freshman, two sophomores, six juniors and three seniors. They have already competed at several schools, including Belle Plaine, Bishop Carroll, Campus, Clearwater, El Dorado, Fairfield, Kingman, Life Prep, Mulvane, Trinity and Wellington.

“I’ve been happy with the way that they’ve gotten better,” Mrs. Martin said. “Even though they haven’t placed, or gotten out very far, I see individuals getting better and better and buzzing in and a lot of the times they’re right, which is definitely a confidence booster.”

The team will be going to League on Jan. 28 and after will attend Regionals on Feb. 6.

“I think the season is going pretty well,” Mrs. Kitch said. “Mrs. Martin has been working hard, contacting other coaches from around the state for suggestions and looking for tournaments we can go to. Except for league and substate, everything we go to are invitational tournaments. So if you are new and not on the other coach’s contact list, they don’t know to invite you. She has been asking for advice from me and Mrs. Pauly because she really wants to be a good coach and keep our program moving forward. I guess you could say it is a rebuilding year for the team.”
