On March 26, the Rudd scholarship team came to the school to present a scholarship to senior Mya Scott. Scott will be able to go to Wichita State University on a full ride. This scholarship goes up to $100,000 and covers tuition, room and board, meal plans, and textbooks.
The process of applying for this scholarship started back in October. Students had to fill out an application with two recommendation letters, two essays, five honors achievements, five academic achievements, and five activities the student has been most involved in. If the student is selected as a finalist, they make it to the next selection tier, earning an interview in February.
When the scholarship was presented to Scott, the room was full of emotions.
“I cried, and I was both happy and shocked,” Scott said. “I was anxious all day if I was going to get it or not. It was a huge weight lifted off of my shoulders.”
Scott is attending WSU and getting a bachelor’s degree in journalism and media production.
“I plan on becoming an editor-in-chief on a website,” Scott said. “Rudd will give me connections to do that [with] networking.”
Scott said she had a lack of confidence when the process first started.
“If you think you have a shot, go for it,” Scott said. “Mrs. Martin gave me the confidence to go for it even though I thought I could not do it.”
