The first round of sub-state was played at home on Feb. 26 and 27. The girls lost against Garden Plain 35-28. The boys beat Belle Plaine with a score of 62-40 and advanced on to play Independent on March 1. After winning that game with a score of 47-35, they beat Remington in the championship with a score of 43-32.
“We really just played for each other, and as a team, we clicked well over the weekend,” senior Nash Johnsen said. “It wasn’t just one person. We all came together.”
Junior Eli Howard said the teams were very strong in defense so they had to match with them. When it got tough, he said they had a way of bouncing back.
“We are always picking each other up no matter what,” Howard said. “We call it ‘next play mentality.’”
State will start on Thursday, March 7. The boys will be playing Lyndon in Dodge City.
“[Our expectations are] to go out there and do our best and come back with a win and get all the way to that final game,” senior Taylor Wykes said.
