On Jan. 17, the varsity boys basketball team played their first tournament game at Chaparral against Reno County.
Some players said that they struggled with nerves during the game.
“I was kind of nervous, but going into a game expecting to win helped with my nerves,” junior Grant Fisher said. “I held the defense, helped with getting offensive sets.”
Fisher scored 5 points in the game against Reno County, and Conway won 55-35. Junior Eli Howard scored the most points with 19.
In the second round, the Cardinals played Circle and lost 41-49. It was a much closer game than expected, given that they are a state-ranked 4A team.
“Overall we did well,” senior Taylor Wykes said. “We came out in the beginning 15 to 0 against a 4A school. Everyone was playing together on defense.”
This meant that they would play Wellington on Saturday for 3rd place. The cardinals lost this game 59-63.
“We came out flat, didn’t rebound as we should have,” Wykes said. ”Offense was moving, but they weren’t getting the shot they wanted.”
