On Feb. 28, the girls basketball team traveled to Howard-West Elk in the first round of games for sub-state. Unfortunately, the girls suffered a defeat, with a close score throughout the game that widened in the final minutes, ending the game with a score 42-50.

There were a lot of emotions after the loss, especially from the seniors as it was their last game.

“[It felt] bittersweet,” said senior Loren May. “Sad that it’s my last high school sport ever and the last time I’ll play with the team and Allyson, the other senior.”

But, despite the loss of the seniors and saddening loss, the team didn’t necessarily go out on a bad note.

“I think we improved a lot from the beginning to the end,” said sophomore Melissa Ebenkamp. “[In the beginning,] we weren’t playing as a team, but by the end we were.”

On March 1, the boys team welcomed Howard-West Elk to compete in the first round of sub-state. After a back and forth game, they pulled out the victory with a score of 58-47.

After the boys’ win at home, they advanced to the second round and met Sedan at Dexter High School on March 4. Many students journeyed on a pep bus to go support the team. Both teams fought hard, but in the end, Conway lost on a buzzer-beater, 30-31. It was a heart-wrenching defeat, one that broke the hearts of many, especially the seniors.

“We started off good then after that it went kinda downhill,” senior Izic Billups said. “So it kind of hurt that we let it slip away, and it really sucked.”

Despite the loss, the boys said they were still optimistic about how the season went.

“We were definitely a lot better than last year,” sophomore Nash Johnsen said. “We played better as a team and we should’ve gone farther in sub-state than we did.”
