On March 20, the sophomores and juniors took state assessments. Throughout the day, all of the high school students had different speakers and activities to attend. Damon Parker from The Jones Project, Bella Andra from She Speaks, instructors from Cowley College, and CSHS alumni came in between assessments to speak to students.
Parker talked about the struggles he’s had with mental health to let students know that they aren’t alone and to always find a way.
“I liked Damon Parker. I feel like it could really help some kids who are really struggling,” senior Melissa Ebenkamp said. “I think with people who don’t have those types of struggles, it shows them how hard it can be and brings more light to it.”
The freshman class also went on a college tour at WSU Tech.
“I enjoyed seeing the welding room. I’ve thought of going into that career,” freshman Grayson Allen said. “We saw a Darth Vader helmet made by one of the machines.”
High school counselor Kirsty Martin had a variety of people come in to speak from mental health to future careers.
“A lot of it is that I wanted to find something that appealed to everyone even if it was just one thing,” Martin said. “I’ll try to have a different variety next year so you’re not hearing the same things over and over.”
