On Nov. 18, seniors Mya Scott and Julia Zoglmann traveled to Wichita State University to compete against more than 500 other students in the Distinguished Scholarship Invitational (DSI). DSI is a chance at $64,000 to attend WSU.
Before attending, students had to write two essays.
“I wrote about my experience with being a leader in not just a school position but in a more personal matter,” Scott said. “I wrote about how Tamara Salisbury helped me decide that I was going to have a journalism major from her amazing guidance.”’
While at WSU, students had to work in groups to solve a problem where their leadership skills were evaluated.
“I will probably feel it out at first, see how people are interacting, then see how I want to approach it,” Zoglmann said. “I’ll just do what I normally do, make sure everyone is included and take the lead if no one else is.”
Lastly, the students were interviewed on personal beliefs to evaluate their judgment and ideals.
“It’s kind of nerve wracking because it will be in front of other people,” Scott said, “but I’ve been interviewed before for other scholarships.”
