“Orbo’s Odyssey” is a speed-based platformer and collectathon created by FeverDreamJohnny of Feverdream Softworks. It’s a newer game that I was looking at on Steam (a digital game store) back in late August. The game had surprisingly high reviews for how recently it came out, and that got my attention. I finally decided to pull the trigger and buy it a month ago, and wow, it’s good.
Immediately, you are brought to a put together and visually pleasing title screen with easy to navigate menus. I jumped straight into this new game.
You start off with a cutscene between Orbo and his co-worker Peeb. Orbo is going into his boss’ office to grab his keys and go home. Peeb tells Orbo that the door opener for people who don’t have arms has stopped working, just as the door slams shut, locking them both inside. Peeb tells Orbo they’re going to need an arm to open the door.
Personally, I think this game has well-crafted and fun controls, allowing you to pretty much fly across levels if you’re able to master them. The speed and intense gameplay is hard to learn but rewarding when you’re able to get it down and master it.
After that you’re introduced to the four main levels of the game. There are five gears to collect in each, and those gears can be used to build parts of a robot arm to open up the door. After all levels are beaten and you complete your arm, you fight a final boss and get to the end of the game.
Now while the game does seem pretty short, it’s actually incredibly fun and doesn’t overstay its welcome. With four completely different and wacky levels with brand new gameplay elements, characters, and story pieces sprinkled in each one, it goes by fast, but it’s so diverse and unique that it just gives you endless replayability, especially now with mod support allowing for infinite possibilities.
Even with how unrealistic it is, I found myself completely immersed in its world and somewhat related to what looks like a bunch of bland characters. There’s just so much character and so much soul and love put into such a goofy and fun little game. And with all the well-hidden secrets, this was for sure one of the coolest little games I’ve ever played, and I’m so glad I decided to follow my gut and check it out.
If you’ve got a PC and a couple bucks to spare, you should check out the game too. The game is also coming to Nintendo Switch.
I give this game a big 5 out of 5 cardinal heads.
