Over the summer, administrative assistant Daphne Kennard and her husband Wade opened an ice cream shop called the Daily Scoop. On June 5, they started with a soft opening just serving ice cream from 12-5 p.m. Then June 10, they held their grand opening, serving ice cream, muffins, cheesecakes, and more.
“It was Osner Hall before we bought it. We completely gutted everything. We tore up the flooring, new walls, ceiling, plumbing, and heating,” Daphne said. “We spent time doing that on weekends and on nights after work. It took us nine months to remodel.”
The shop is currently open 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekdays and 8 a.m. 8 p.m. on Saturdays, and it is closed on Sundays. They also cater special events like weddings and make ice cream cakes for birthdays.
“It’s nice to be the place families can come to and celebrate special events,” Daphne said. “My favorite memory was getting there one night, and there were like 10 bikes out front; a family and their kids had ridden their bikes up to have ice cream.”
Currently 11 high school students are employed at the Daily Scoop. Workers scoop ice cream, serve muffins, make milkshakes, along with several other tasks. The long hours that the shop is open allows high school students to work before or after school in addition to on Saturday.
“It’s another place in town for high schoolers to have a job,” Kennard said. “It’s been fun working with the students and supporting them in their school activities.”
