The school’s OWL site, brought together by science teacher Chris Bellar, was in need of a shed, one that can store all the tools and equipment needed to maintain the site. Ag Mechanics teacher Zach Cooper offered to have his class create the shed for the site.
“The OWL site is made for student learning,” Cooper said. “The shed we’re building is used to not only help progress the site but also provide a learning experience and hands-on activity for my students. When I was younger, we actually did something pretty similar to this, and it really helped me understand construction and working as a team. I plan to do the same thing for my students.”
This is one of the first times that the Ag Mechanics class has done a project of this scale and value. Some students have said this has been a good learning experience for them and a breath of fresh air from normal projects
“[The shed] benefits us and teaches us a lot about framing and can really help us personally with things such as house renovation,” senior Nathan Berntsen said. “I don’t plan to pursue anything like this though. I just really enjoy this class.”
Mid-America and Ozone Roofing have also reached out to the class, offering to teach the kids about the construction process as well as providing them with construction help. Mid-America will install exterior windows and Ozone Roofing will provide the class with roofing materials.
“It’s pretty cool and fun that the roofing and window companies are coming out to help us learn more about this stuff,” senior Brayden Kunz said. “It’s very kind of them to provide us with help and materials for the project too.”
