At the beginning of the year, Jennifer Potts took over teaching for Art 1, 2, 3 and 3D Art. She joins three other new teachers placed in the high school building this year, and she is the third art teacher added to the roster in the past three years.
This isn’t Potts’ first year at a Conway Springs school. Previously, she was a paraeducator at the elementary school. She said that she has enjoyed teaching as a career.
As students walked into the classroom, they noticed multiple changes within the classroom.
“I want [my classroom] to be an open and creative environment,” Potts said. “I want people to be themselves, and I want people to respect each other’s art.”
As part of her influence and journey into teaching, Potts looked back at previous experiences through her years in education.
“I felt like I wasn’t a sports person, and art was my outlet,” Potts said. “If I could be an outlet for those students then it can help them grow.”
Throughout the year, Potts said students can expect to have different lesson plans depending on the type of art they’re going to take. However, Potts said she wants to leave all of her students, regardless of what they take, with an important lesson.
“[I want my students] to be confident in their skills, regardless of their level, I want them to be confident in what they do,” Potts said.
