For about 20 years, science teacher Chris Bellar has helped his local church (Hope Mennonite Church), and multiple other churches, in the monthly Sandwich Saturday. Sandwich Saturday is an event where people from multiple churches get together to make and deliver over 150 sandwiches and deliver them to people without a home and people who need a free meal.

Bellar decided to show some of the NHS members the importance of helping others.

“Homelessness is a problem throughout the world. And sometimes, we think of it as other countries or big cities and then you realize it’s in Wichita,” Bellar said. “There’s people in our own community that struggle to find food so it’s a good thing to do and it’s good to wake you (students) up to the problem of society.”

Members who went said they learned from the experience.

“I thought it was a good experience,” junior Haylee Osner said. “I could see how other people live and how I could help them out.”

Many members said they would want to help again.

“I would go again,” senior Kara Zoglmann said. “It definitely made a difference in the way I’m thinking and I’m more grateful for things.”
