Sergeant Jacob Moore came with the Kansas National Guard recruiting students on Thursday, Sept. 9. Many students came up to the table during first and second lunch, and Moore gave them an informational presentation regarding recruitment through the National Guard.

Seniors Ethan Perkins and Gavin Armstrong said they are joining for college benefits.

Other benefits of the Guard include health insurance, college funds, a salary, housing, etc.

“[I would leave] sometime next summer to basic training for six weeks,” Armstrong said, “then to AIT for eight to twelve weeks.”

Once students show interest, they have physical and mental health evaluations. If they pass the health evaluations, one of the next steps is taking the ASVAB.

The ASVAB will be offered here Oct. 15. Students can sign up with counselor Kristy Martin.

Martin said there is no passing or failing the ASVAB; the test reflects a student’s strengths and abilities. Once the ASVAB is taken, students talk with recruiters and determine what field would be best for them and their career in the Guard.

“Usually you serve in the National Guard for six-plus years,”  Martin said.
