The volleyball team played the last regular season games last night and has one more tournament to finish out the season. The sub-state tournament is being held at Garden Plain on Oct. 24. The tournament is single elimination, so every game could be their last. The varsity team, along with a few JV players, will travel to compete against teams.

The girls are practicing new and old techniques to help them in the upcoming tournament. 

“We’re coming in with a hard team for the first round, but we will do the best we can individually to get far in the game,” senior Taryn Starks said. “We’ve been working mostly on the basics, or what we first worked on in the season, such as freeballs and hitting deep corners.”

This tournament is not only important for the team but also for the seniors. However, the team may have to play without one of the seniors. Senior Tatum Wykes is unsure whether she will be cleared to play by Saturday. Many of the girls are hoping to make it to State in order to make it count.

“I think that we as a team will put in a lot of effort to try to win,” senior Lizzy Curry said. “To make this last season count, I’m not taking any day for granted and savoring the memories the best I can.” 

The volleyball team has players from different classes on varsity. While the varsity team consists mostly of seniors and juniors, certain underclassmen have been given the opportunity to play for the varsity because of their hard work and dedication towards practice.

“We definitely need to talk more and stay positive, and I think we’ll play well if we do that,” sophomore Melainy Kennard said. “It feels pretty rewarding to get to play with the girls on the varsity team. They’re like sisters to me.”
