Scholar’s Bowl kicks off with a new season

Things are looking up for this year’s Scholar’s Bowl team. With the help of the first year coach and English teacher Kristy Martin, the Scholar’s Bowl team has gone from 10 to 32.
“Practices have been fun, and the whole team is really excited for this upcoming season, especially with a new coach,” said junior Carter Bartonek.
This year the Scholar’s Bowl team holds practices two times a week, and they can go to as many as seven meets each. There are many new members to this year’s team, including junior Rylie Thompson.
“I’ve never done Scholar’s Bowl before, so I’m excited to see what it’s all about. I’m kind of nervous about the meets since it’s my first year, but I’m excited to get more involved in extracurriculars this year,” Thompson said.
Although there are many new faces, there are also many returning members as well, such as senior Chance Rogers, who at the end of this season will have been a part of the team for 3 years.
“I’m not really nervous about the meets. I really enjoy them because it’s just memorization really. I am excited to have a new coach and see new faces on the team,” said Rogers.
Along with new members to the team, there is also a new coach this year, Kristy Martin, who is just as excited as the kids for this season.
“I am excited to see so many kids that are interested, and as a first year coach I am thankful for the resources I have from Mrs. Kitch and from Mrs. Pauly to help me learn how to do this effectively,” said Martin.
Even though this will be her first year coaching, Martin isn’t new to the Scholar’s Bowl team. She also participated in Scholar’s Bowl when she was in high school. The team when she was in school was even sponsored by her fellow coach Sarah Kitch.
“I was in Scholar’s Bowl in high school when we first started having a Scholar’s Bowl team, and I’ve always liked to see kids who excel in academics and maybe some kids that just have general knowledge be able to compete. Mrs. Kitch was actually my sponsor in high school and I think that our kids need as many opportunities as possible to get involved in school,” said Martin.
