On Feb. 26, Conway Springs’s long-time band director, Dennis Kerr, was inducted into the KMEA (Kansas Music Educators Association) Hall of Fame.

Kerr received his Bachelor’s in Music Education in 1981 and Master’s of Music Education in 1989 from Wichita State University. Kerr has had a 40-year long teaching career, spending the last 23 years teaching in Conway Springs, where he lives with his wife Ellen Kerr.

There were many awards being presented that day: Administrator of the Year, Outstanding Teacher Awards, and many grants. Among them was Kerr’s induction to the Hall of Fame.

“It was very humbling to be in the presence of all the members of KMEA and receive that award,” Kerr said.

After they announced the awards, they showed Kerr’s pre-recorded speech.

Many students said they are fond of Kerr.

“He’s one of the best teachers I’ve ever had,” said junior Hannah Zoglmann. “He’s taught me and so many other students how to truly appreciate music.”
